5Rhythms FAQs
1. What happens in a 5Rhythms class?
The teacher will play a "wave" of music for dancers in the class. You are welcome to find your own space and pace. The music starts gently, building up to a peak and then winding back down to slower rhythms again. There will be some gentle facilitation to guide you.
2. What are the 5Rhythms?
Created by Gabrielle Roth in the 1970s, the 5Rhythms are a map of movement she discovered while teaching dance. The 5Rhythms are: Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness. Watch this video of two experienced dancers to give you an idea of what they can look like.
3. Are there set moves?
No. The teacher will offer music and some guidance on the 5Rhythms, but it's up to you to listen to your body and do your own dance.

4. Can I talk? Or have a few drinks first?
This isn't the place to have a chat. There are other ways to communicate if necessary, eg. saying hello can be done through a smile or gesture. It's also not a space to come to if you've consumed alcohol or drugs.

5. Is there physical contact? Can I pick up?
Mostly, this is a non-contact dance. There is a lot of non-verbal communication in the dance, that's part of the fun. At times dancers may choose to make some physical contact. But if you sense someone needs space, or communicates this to you with a gesture, please respect their wishes. It's also not a space to seek sexual contact or pick up on the dance floor.

6. Is it spiritual?
People often find the 5Rhythms healing and profound. It's the teacher's intention to create a sacred holding space for you to dance. However, you don't have to be "spiritual" to enjoy the 5Rhythms. It's great exercise and great fun as well.

7. What should I wear/ bring?
Bring a water bottle to keep hydrated. Wear clothes you feel comfortable to move in (usually this is loose fitting clothes or active wear). On your feet, you can either have bare feet or sometimes dancers buy special flexible dance shoes to wear. We ask that dancers keep a shirt on, as bare chests can make some people feel uncomfortable. We do have air conditioning in the space to help keep you cool.

8. What if it's my first class?
You're most welcome to simply turn up and join the class! If you like, you can check in with the person who greets you at the door, and tell them it's your first time. They'll keep an eye out for you and tell you any housekeeping. You can also contact Naomi for a chat before you come if you feel unsure.

9. I have access needs, can I come?
There are stairs up to the Studio, however we can arrange access by a lift if you contact us beforehand. Contact Naomi to discuss your specific needs so we can best support you.

10. What if I have pre-existing mental or physical health issues?
Please look after your own physical and emotional wellbeing - don't push yourself to do anything that may be harmful to you. If you have injuries, consider how to best look after yourself. Keeping your eyes open when dancing or moving through the space helps keep yourself and other dancers safe. If you have cold and flu symptoms please stay home this time, we'd love to see you when you are better.

The dance isn't intended to be a counselling space, but if you feel triggered or unsafe, please speak to Naomi after the class, who can give you some guidance and referrals. She is trained in Physical and Mental Health First Aid.
